The magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of three oriented blocks of glacial till from a chalk pit near Cambridge, southeast England, is described. The magnetic fabric is due to magnetite with the particle axes alined. The magnetic fabric can be used in the same way as a fabric established by small stone orientation, and gives in addition an estimate of the orientation of all three principal axes of the magnetite particles. The information can be used to provide an indication of the direction of flow in the ice sheet.
