The Lammermuir-Stranraer moraine, extending from the east coast of Scotland, near St. Abb's Head to Stranraer on the west coast, was originally interpreted as marking the limit of a major readvance of Highland glaciation. It is shown here that the central and eastern parts are composed of fluvioglacial deposits formed in association with dead ice. The true moraines occur in the higher parts of the Southern Uplands and represent local valley glaciations.
