A new instrument for the use of field geologists in orientation studies is described. It consists essentially of a hinged compass on a plate, which is rotatable on a second plate and mounted on three legs, two of which are knee-jointed and the other movable backward and forward. The value of the design is that it uses direct contact and that little or no excavation of an exposing face is necessary for making measurements.
