The Old Red sandstone (Devonian) of Spitsbergen is known as the Wood Bay series. The series consists of three divisions, of which only two are present in the Ekmanfjorden area, the Kapp Kjeldsen and the Lykta. The former is a pale green sandstone characterized by Giganthaspis. The Lykta is a 1,350-foot series of sandstones and shales, with interbedded marls, characterized by contorted bedding and various linear structures, some of which may be of organic origin. Vertebrate remains are present, including the guide fossil Doryaspis. The sedimentary structures and geologic history suggest deposition on a delta front.
