Massive reddish sandstones and quartzites lying between the Coal Measures and Carboniferous limestone in the Bristol district, England, have been referred to the Millstone Grit. The writer presents evidence based on a bore-hole core from Bristol to show that part of the sequence is Namurian in age. The marine fossils obtained from the roof of a thin coal include one new species, Aviculopecten lepidus. Well-preserved plant remains were obtained from another layer.
