A distinct block composition is the most characteristic feature of the present structural pattern of the Spitsbergen archipelago. Three regional structural complexes are distinguished which correspond with periods of geosynclinal, post-geosynclinal, and platform development. Boundaries between the main structural elements coincide with major fault zones. The various structures are described and dated by stratigraphic relationships.
