According to the editors, the latest (5th) edition of the American Geological Institutes Glossary of Geology contains some 39,300 entries running from A (mass number) to zykalite (a greyish-white orthorhombic mineral). Over 3600 of the entries are new and nearly 13,000 have been updated; 5300 of them are mineral names, an increase of around 1000, and they constitute the largest single group
