Neocatastrophism has been with us for a few years now. I suspect that renewed interest in this approach to earth science probably predates the 1980 Alvarez et al. paper that linked the K/T extinction with an extra-terrestrial cause. Stratigraphers such as Derek Ager were certainly pedalling neocatastrophism back in the 1970s but there is no doubt that the impact of the Alvarez bolide sent shock waves through the geological community and we are still experiencing the swash and backwash.
Catastrophes and Lesser Calamities is a timely effort to try and mop up some of the mess some 25 years
