An investigation of the optical properties, x-ray diffraction data, differential thermal analysis, and surface area of specimens of chalcedony and flint has been made to determine the amount of opal present. The results indicate that chalcedony and flint are composed of a microporous mass of silica rather than a quartz-opal mixture.
